Language Courses
JAPN 1010 & 1020 Elementary Japanese
Beginner course that focuses on building fundamental skills in the Japanese language. Students focus on hiragana, katakana, and elementary level kanji and grammar. JAPN 1020 places an emphasis on building stronger reading and writing skills and smooth communication.
JAPN 2010 & 2020 Elementary Japanese
Continuation of JAPN 1020 where students increase their ability to read, write, and speak in Japanese. Continuation of kanji and grammar studies occur as well.
JAPN 3050 Japanese Conversation and Comp.
Advanced level language course aimed for those who have completed 4 semesters of language study. Students continue to develop their reading, writing, and speaking skills, focusing on the use of authentic Japanese. This course has a particular focus on expressing yourself through writing, conversation, and presentation. This course is conducted in Japanese.
JAPANESE III A-C (CHUKYO UNIVERSITY)
Students focused on increasing their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in the Japanese language. The course covered a wide range of topics, and was conducted in Japanese.
JAPN 3160 Japanese for International Business
Study of spoken and written language commonly used in the Japanese-speaking business world. Cross cultural references provide opportunities for comparative contrastive analysis of American and Japanese business cultural settings. This course is conducted in Japanese.

Global Media and Culture (Chukyo University)
In this course students examine globalization, with a particular focus on cultural change. They do so by analyzing the ongoing consolidation of the media.
HIST 3300 History of Modern China
Students learn about the growth and development of Chinese civilization from ancient to present times. The course emphasizes the 20th century and the communist regimes rise to power.

HIST 3330 History of Modern Japan
Study of the development of Japanese society. The course is mostly dedicated to modern Japan, focusing on the mid-19th century to the present.
LANG 3710 JAPN Language and Culture
Study of how language is used in society, with a particular focus on Japan. Introduces key theories and approaches of sociolinguistics alongside selected case studies from Japanese society. Exams a wide range of contexts, such as film, face-to-face conversations, computer-mediated conversation, and more.
JAPN 4560 Japanese Film
Explores the cultural and literary aspects of Japanese film. Places emphasis on content such as the development of Japanese film styles, interrelationships between Western and Japanese filmmaking, the development of Japanese global media such as animation, and more.

LANG 3100 East Asian Pop Culture
Interdisciplinary study of the social, political, and economic contexts from cultural products from East Asia. The course has a focus on Japan, South Korea, China, and Hong Kong.
JAPN 4010 Japanese Lit in Translation
Introduction to premodern and modern Japan through the major ideas and social changes that had impacts on Japanese literature, film, and popular culture. Explores critical questions in Japanese literature such as westernization and modernization, traditional aesthetics, gender issues, etc. through the use of cross-disciplinary methodologies.

LANG 3000 Intro Linguistics
Introduction to the study of linguistics. Covers topics such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Knowledge is applied primarily to English, but occasionally other languages as well. Students are also introduced to subfields of linguistics such as language change and language acquisition.
Current Topics in Linguistics (Chukyo University)
This course aims to focus topics commonly observed in the study of generative syntax. Students are acquainted with key topics in contemporary syntactic theory.
Workshop in Intercultural Communication (Chukyo University)
This course was designed to increase students' understanding and awareness of different cultural backgrounds, social and historical contexts, and its problems. Class placed an emphasis on group discussions, where students from different cultural backgrounds collaborated and shared their thoughts and perspectives.
